How does BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) affect your voting?

Just curious. . . The Ontario elections are coming up- the liberal party reinstated the provincial pit-bull ban and from my understanding may choose to ban more dog breeds and mixes. The conservatives and democrats are both against the ban and 'claim' they would remove it.

I do not want the liberals to win another seat- because as the owner of an unidentified black and tan mutt, he could face euthanization in the future (if the liberals win and extend the ban to rotweillers or dobermans). I usually like the Democrats but they will not win in my area- so I may end up voting Conservatives simply to keep the liberals and their breed bans out.

Does anyone else feel so passionate about BSL (either pro or con) that they would base their voting decision SOLELY on the party's position? How does BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) affect your voting?AGAINST BSL.

I dont want this to be like france!!

(muzzled your mutts and other "dangerous" dogs.)

but I guess I have to givethem credit, muzzling is better than euthanizing!!!How does BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) affect your voting?
BSL is great for ONE THING. Keeping lawyers busy. It does little if anything to reduce dog attacks. Below is a link that highlights how useful BSL has been over here. It's in response to the tragic events on New Years Day where a little girl was killed by an APBT.

It's been in existence in the UK since 1991, and all that's happened is that a whole load of people that own Staffordshire Bull Terrier crosses and Boxer crosses (plus a whole load of other dogs) have been up in court or threatened with that just because their dog resembles a pit bull (no matter how slightly).

The worst thing is, it'll be difficult to repeal that law now that it's in place. Doing so could potentially mean an explosion in the number of these dogs being bred - a disaster for any breed but worse if it's dogs as powerful as a pit.

There are various "dog control orders" being put in place throughout the UK. Some councils have banned dogs from being off-lead in ANY public place (so no off-lead run or play, the dog suffers).

Other councillors in the UK are considering local extensions to BSL to incorporate more breeds.

I'm lucky, my local council are pretty dog-friendly.

If there was a party that wanted to introduce or extend laws that were restrictive of RESPONSIBLE dog ownership, I'd vote against them, regardless of what their other policies were.

I would however be in favour of harsher punishments for irresponsible dog ownership (eg increased fines or even confiscation of dogs - depending on the severity of the offence, or if it's repeated often). How does BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) affect your voting?Yes... it will affect my voting.

When it comes to mandatory spay/neuter laws and BSL my voting will be for WHOEVER DOES THE MOST TO PRESERVE MY RIGHTS.How does BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) affect your voting?
Well, I'm in the states, but my last 4 votes for Pres. were based almost entirely on environmental issues. ALL my local votes were based that way. Most environmentally interested candidates also tend to favor laws which support animal care, not lessen it. So in the case of the upcoming US election, I will once again be voting for the most environmental candidate- that wil most likely be Edwards or Clinton. The only candidate I know that is FOR BSL is Rudy Giuliani, but having lived so close to NYC while he was there- you couldn't pay me to vote for him even without the BSL or environmental issues.

I hope you Canadians vote that jerkoff right out of office. Basset's post about mutts having no CKC registration and therefore no protection scared the living s hit out of me yesterday... I kept thinking, "what if it happens here and they show up on my porch?" My dog looks nothing like a 'pit' but is white with spots and ****** floppy ears and she does bark and growl ferociously at strangers until commanded to 'say hi.' How could I protect my dog?How does BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) affect your voting?Yes. I normally lean towards the conservative, although I vote for whichever party/candidate I think has the best platform. But I'd vote NDP, Green, heck, even the Natural Law party (are they still around?) if I thought it would get the Fiberals out of office, because the DOLA is simply awful. At least the Tories *claim* they're willing to look at alternatives (whether they will or not is another matter), but ALL the Liberal candidates heard from so far support the DOLA and think it's a good thing. How does BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) affect your voting?
vote against it by all means. if they can demolish or ban one breed today, it will be another tomorrow, soon there will be no political boundaries on what dog is "safe" to obtain.

considering all dogs have the capability to hurt a person.

politicians (liberals in particular) are such a coy species they fear anything outside of they re corrupt little minds.they want everything to be controlled and 100% predictable. (as animals are not.)

we have not had BSL come up in my area yet, but they will have hell when they try and take our dogs, most of the people here are ranchers and farmers whos families have taken in alot a pit bulls or rottweillers. good luck to the poor polititians who think this injustice will fly in my area.
I am game for the bans if they offer temperament testing before a decission is made on any specifice dog or breed.

As a trainer in aggression work there are individuals within a breed that do not have the same characteristics of the breed. These dogs would be exceptions if temperament testing was part of the ban. This would allow the good dogs to be excused from the ban.

I would push for the ban IF there was temperament testing offered to the breeds that are on the hit list.

Although I do not trust Pitts I know that there are exceptions to the rule. I have a female German Shepherd %26amp; she would pass themperament testing %26amp; I intend on getting a Doberman when my old Chow X passes. I want to get a dominate one but it will be well trained. Trained to the point that I could lay a new born baby on the floor infront of him %26amp; he would lick %26amp; smell the infant %26amp; nothing more.

I would agree with a ban IF there was temperament testing offered at the same time.
