Why is there legislation against firing workers for being gay in some states?

In California, Washington, New Jersey, and some other states, there are laws on the books saying you can't discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation when it comes to employment.

I don't agree with this policy because If I was the boss, my opinion is I should be able to decide the moral direction of my company, and gay people do not compliment morality very well.

Any chance we can get these repealed? Why is there legislation against firing workers for being gay in some states? To protect hard working people from morons.

Anita Bryant is that you?Why is there legislation against firing workers for being gay in some states?
i dunno man, but you and all of your friends should put on your pointy white hats of justice and march on the state capitol. Dont forget to duck when they start throwing rocks! Why is there legislation against firing workers for being gay in some states?no its a discrimination thing, The law sees it as the same thing as you cant fire someone for being black, short, women, ugly or any other charateristic that isnt related to work.
Because some states believe in the premise that "all men are created equal". Go work construction if you don't like homos, nazi. Why is there legislation against firing workers for being gay in some states?because some jobs shouldent have gay workers.. like gay people shouldent be allowed to work at sausage factoriesWhy is there legislation against firing workers for being gay in some states?
why isnt there legislation for getting people like you to shut up
Because the fact that gay people don't compliment morality is simply your opinion..

How about we change the word gay to people with brown eyes, or people over 5ft 4? Should we fire them too?Why is there legislation against firing workers for being gay in some states?
why shouldn't gay people be allowed to make a living? how about age discrimination? or sex discrimination? At one point boss's didn't think it was moral to let women work...do u see the problem here? EVERYONE should have the right to work!
If a person is able and willing to work, he/ she should be allowed to. Your "morality" should play no part in it. The personal love life of an employee does not affect the job at hand. If it does, heterosexual or homosexual, than that may be grounds for discipline. To flat out not hire someone, though, because you don't like their personal life choices is discrimination.
You would pay my wages... and I would provide a service to you... That is it....what gives you a right to comment on my morality! You have none.. and to refuse a person a job because they are Gay is the same as saying I refuse you a Job because you are black!.. If you subscribe to that then you are quite the narrow minded, homophobic bigot! and I do hope that someone in your future career, refuses you a job based on one of your traits....Idiot...
What I don't get is how does your employer know who or what your sleeping with unless you tell them?

Why do gay folks think everyone wants to know what they do with their winkies-

Polite people do not discuss sex at work- therefore sexual orientation should or could not even come up if people kept their mouths shut and certainly couldn't be cause for termination.
Not all people consider homosexuality immoral, but I do. Even though I consider homosexuality immoral I believe you should not be able to discriminate against someone for race, religion, gender, or sexual preference. If a homosexual was to be flirting with other employees I would fire them, and I do not believe that you should be allowed to hold a job in the US unless you are a legal citizen or are here on a student visa. I am not saying this because I am homophopic , because I'm not afraid of them I just don't like them/hate them.
If an employee's sexuality affects his/her work performance, fine, but how often is this going to happen? Why should you be able to fire anyone for anything other than behavior/work performance on the job? I've known plenty of heterosexuals that were completely immoral on and off the job... would you let them coast?
40 years ago, people would have made this exact same argument.. except change gays with black or some slur.
Because being gay has nothing to do with one's job performance whatsoever. Does being straight make you a better worker?
You're right - let's get them repealed. Because as the boss, I want to decide the moral direction of my company and any right-wing bible thumpers who are in my employ, I would want to fire because they do not compliment my idea of morality very well.

Oh wait... there's laws against that too.
A person could be gay and you would never know it! A person's personal business should have nothing to do with their job, and should not be discriminated against. What if you had red hair and all of a sudden your boss fired you because he didn't think it was moral?! How much sense would that make, none, that's why employment based on sexuality doesn't make sense. Some of our best govt. officials have been gay and done a wonderful job at bettering their state or community. Every person has the right to be what and who they want without repress. The United States as a whole doesn't have morals like we used to, GUARANTEED no business is any better, probably worse. If big business were worried about morals, there would not be CEO's in jail. No chances on getting this repealed, and it shouldn't be! People like you make the US look like a bunch of arrogant assholes!
Firing workers for sexual orientation should be illegal. Sexual orientation has no connection to how well a person can do their job. And sexual orientation isn't a moral decision - it isn't a decision at all. Being gay or straight is NOT a conscious choice that can be changed.
Gays should not be discriminated against. they are people too. But they should not be celebrated or encouraged either. It is not normal, positive or healthy. If someone is publicly flaunting his homosexuality at work, and you don't kike it, you should be allowed to fire him. The military got it right, "don't ask, don't tell"
Oh yeah, you are probably really moral...
ever think you spend too much time contemplating other people's sex lives?
This would probably explain why you are not the boss ANYWHERE, and I am sure you have a boss, and will always have a boss for the rest of your life. This is so narrow-minded that it almost makes me angry, but it doesn't quite do it cause your opinion does not repeal what protects me in the workplace from sexual discrimination.

Also, someone said that people don't talk about sex at the workplace and that is simply not true. I sit around all day at my job listening to people talk about sex, and the minute I open my mouth to talk about my girlfriend(in a non-sexual way), the reaction is, "No one wants to hear about that!" accompanied with a look of disgust. So please don't say that heterosexual people do not have freedom to talk about sex at work, and that gays have that same freedom, because we don't.
Unfortunately, we live in a country that likes to tell people what to do, especially if you hurt somebody's feelings. Typical liberal mentality.
If you notice the states where this is occurring are all liberal democrat states. Now remember the democrat party is the party of the common working man. Now remember that the majority of businesses in this country are small "mom and pop" type business run by the common man as defined by the democrat party, those making less than $125K annually. That means that these democrat states are now telling these small businesses who they can and cannot employ or dismiss. But if you have certain ethics and moral standards, are now these states dictating those standard for these types of businesses? Further, if it is your religious belief that basically forbid you to promote homosexuality by employing a gay person, then is not the democrat run state governments of these states violating the "separation of church and state" premise that liberal democrats scream about so much?

And if you need an example, suppose I am a devoute Catholic who follows the teachings of the church to the letter. I hire someone without knowing their sexual orientation. Later, I learn that individual is gay. The individual promotes their homosexuality to the customers by flirting with the customers. I think that these actions are promoting homosexuality and so I discuss this with my priest. My priest tells me to follow what I believe to be the best for me and my faith. I am then unable to fire the individual if these states have their way.

These laws, by the definition of the "separation of church and state" can and should be held totally unconstitutional. I use the above example to demonstrate how exactly liberalism and the democrat party are no longer for the common man. It is totally devouted to power and control of all the citizens and the example clearly demonstrates that. These types of laws need to be summarily dismissed as unconstitutional and people need to realize what liberals and democrats want to do to your individualism.

EDIT to all those who say this is a morality issue, then consider that it is immoral to steal or murder or worship the devil. In some cases, that would be totally irrelevant, but in others it would be wrong. I would not want a thief to be handling my money in the bank, or a murder to run a child care center where my kids go, or a devil worshipper selling religious items for me. If a homosexual wants to work, find a place where that is ok. If an employer does not want an employee based upon conflicts with moral, ethical and/or religious standards, then that employer has that right. When you start breaking down to allowing the government who you can and can't fire, then small companies would no longer exist. Take a small restuarant. Has 3 cooks, but one get put in jail for child molestation, but is not convicted and you don't want him working for you anymore selling kids toys. These laws will prevent you from firing that individual
I don't know about it being just certain states.

It is my understanding that discrimination against someone because one is homosexual or lesbian is against the law in all of the 50 states.

I still can鈥檛 figure out or understand WHY so many decree that homosexuals are to be punished; what the punishment should be and that they are the one(s) that should do the punishing when there is NOTHING IN ANY SCRIPTURE THAT I KNOW OF that tells anyone to punish someone because their sexual orientation is that of homosexuality.

If God didn鈥檛 say so just who the !#$%^%26amp;*() do you think you are?

Dude. If you knew the sex habits of some other individuals that many would consider as having good moral values鈥ell鈥 don鈥檛 know WHAT you鈥檇 do.

When I used to visit porn sites I would read some very, I鈥檒l just say, WEIRD links that I didn鈥檛 have the curiosity, nerve or desire to actually want to see what the link says it is.

Apparently, at least ONE SOMEBODY likes and does that stuff or the website wouldn鈥檛 exist.

I鈥檓 against homosexuality but I鈥檓 NOT against homosexuals.

If I were an employer, I would want him to show up on time every day that he is due to work, do the job as best he can that I hired him to do give me a full days work and not sexually harass any of the clients, other employees or me.

As long as he can meet those criteria, he can remain on my payroll.
Good luck getting it changed. We're on the slippery slope downward...slouching towards gomorrah.
What kicks me is you have to allow a gay person to be hired but not Christians! Christians are being discriminated against but being gay isn't. Christians who don't believe in killing, to love one another, not to steal or lie: these are bad things??
