The more interesting fact is that here, as always, Republicans are accusing Democrats of exactly what they're doing. Over the past decade or so, it's absolutely true that the US has given up a great deal of its sovereignty. But none of it has gone to the UN, which remains a very weak organization. Instead, with the enthusiastic backing of the Republican Party, we yielded the right to legislate for the US to foreign bodies, especially the WTO. Any country trading with the US which feels harmed by any American law can ask the WTO for a ruling that the law violates free trade. The WTO will then rule on the law in a secret hearing - private parties aren't allowed to participate, or submit documents, or observe the hearing, or even know who is hearing the dispute. If this secret body decides it doesn't approve of any American law, it has the power to, in effect, impose penalties on the US until the US complies with its ruling.



This isn't some wild theory about an international body that might exist some day. It's real today, and all approved by the Republicans, while claiming to be the great defenders of American sovereignty.How many more years until Democrats propse legislation to unify North America like the EU did?
