Is legislation that disallows same sex marriage discriminatory in your view?

Why or why not?

I find this topic to be a fascinating study in civil rights even though I'm not gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.Is legislation that disallows same sex marriage discriminatory in your view?I think legislation that gives special rights and privileges to people who have chosen to share their life with another, is discriminatory. The government should not be in our personal relationships. Why does this government discriminate against me because I have chosen to remain single? Is legislation that disallows same sex marriage discriminatory in your view?
Yes I think they should be allowed to marry and be miserable like us hetro's.~!

VOTE AGAINST ALL INCUMBENTS IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT AN INCUMBENT IS DON'T VOTE.Is legislation that disallows same sex marriage discriminatory in your view? There is no legislation that disallows same sex marriage, only legislation that states marriage is between a man and a woman.

Many states have civil unions....same legal benefits as traditional marriage.

I don't think it's discriminatory, because gays have the same rights as everyone else.
People can be gay. People can have "civil unions" but should not try to define marriage as anything except between a man and a woman. Is legislation that disallows same sex marriage discriminatory in your view?I am under the belief that it should NOT be a Federal thing. It should be up to each individual State. Is legislation that disallows same sex marriage discriminatory in your view?
It is the will of the people.
No, because marriage is not same-sex; that is a perversion. There are other legal forms that will accomplish the same things, such as partnerships and corporations. The use of the word "marriage" by gays is an attempt to equate their relationships to heterosexual marriages, which they are clearly not.Is legislation that disallows same sex marriage discriminatory in your view?
I'm completely in favor of equal rights for homos. They should be allowed to marry anyone of the opposite sex they choose, just like anyone else.
it has to do with the law, not goverment, not religion, but the legal definiation of marraige,. they got civil unions., its the same thing.
Is not me only being allowed to have one wife discriminatory?

If its seperation of Church and State, why only one wife?
Yes it is -- the simplest solution would be to make marriage just a ceremony and for financial reasons allow any two people to get a civil union

I think the people on the wrong side of this issue in time will be looked at as bigots
I think it is discriminatory.

Gays should enjoy the same rights and responsibilities as all citizens.

My real view is that none of us should need the government to approve our private relationships. Every adult should be able to choose another adult to enter into a legal partnership to protect themselves and their estates in the event of incapacitation (eg. medical decisions), joint tax filings, intestate death.

If people need their unions blessed, let them do it in any manner they deem suitable.
To be discriminatory, I as a heterosexual would be able to do something that a homosexual cannot. I can marry a person of the opposite sex and so can a gay person. Therefore, they are able to perform the same marital act as I can, and are not being discriminated against. Additionally, they can adopt each other, which would create a relationship.
In a way it is.

Because it's Democrat Men that want to marry other Democrat Men.
Legislation which intends to prevent perverse behaviour is no more discriminatory than legistlation which says that only convicted felons can be executed. It simlpy discriminates between good behaviour and bad.
You are asking a question of a majority of people that don't have a clue what homosexuality is about...including myself. People that do not understand cannot just blindly say "sure, it's OK".

There is a nagging doubt about making a decision about something that you cannot relate to,

no matter how hard you try.
No it is a states rights issue and fine if they do and fine if they dont
No, because civil rights in my view refers to what you are born as. Being black or hispanic is a matter of genetics. Being gay is a preference. I consider a civil Union to be enough.
Yes, it is discriminatory, and I hope the Supreme Court finds that it violates the Equal Protection Clause.
No, because it is not normal behavior. It is a life style of which one chooses; unlike if you a born into a certain race of which you have no choice.
Yes, I think it violates equal protection.

It is similar to the bans on interracial marriage (Loving v. Virginia)
Obviously. It singles out gays, as being less than heteros, without the same rights under the law. In direct contradiction of the 14th amendment. Section 1.
Yes, all Americans should have equal protection under the law. The same arguments used against gay marriage today were used against interracial marriage not too long ago.
Yes, it is incredibly discriminatory and wrong. First off, government is not supposed to be interfering with religion as we are a secular state. Many churches have made it clear that they are willing to wed homosexual couples. I don't see why that's a problem, or how it affects anyone but the couple involved. If the churches want to do it, then legislation should not be able to stop them. Neither should outdated definitions.

The fact that a stupid definition is supposed to be ample rationale for holding back equality is hilarious.

Not to mention 99.9% of biologists/geneticists agree that there's a genetic component to homosexuality, so that makes it discrimination based on genetic predisposition, making it no different than discriminating for skin color.

"Evidence from twin studies does in fact support the conclusion that heritable factors play a role in male homosexuality." - Dr. Francis Collins, head of the humane genome project, and responsible for our decoding of the human genome.

When you were an 8 year old playing on the playground, did you decide to be attracted to little Jessica? Did you say "well I could like boys, or I could like girls...I'll like girls!" No, you didn't. Your body told you what you liked, and it's no different for gays. Only uneducated and ignorant people view it as a choice.

So there's as much support for a genetic component in homosexuality as there is in bipolar disorder.

@Tracy - that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Let's take away handicap ramps and handicap parking spots. Sure they WANT crutches, but you don't NEED it with a broken leg. You can crawl. You have every right I do! That's not discriminatory, right? Right.
