In broad strokes, the Reconstruction Era was defined by an effort to end the oppressiveness of slavery. As such, the focus of legislation began with freeing slaves (The Emancipation Proclamation), awarding freed slaves captured land from the Civil War, "Reconstructing" the Southern legislative bodies, and finally improving the ravaged infrastructure of the Southern states.
